Internal Education

  • In 2019, the Department of Science, Research and Education continued to organize local educational activities for FDRH doctors, nurses and other health professionals in the form of regular Scientific Work Meetings of Roosevelt Hospital. The meetings were aimed at raising the professional level of all healthcare providers. The scientific program and invitation were updated and published on the FDRH intranet site. Scientific Work Meetings were rewarded by CME (Continual Medical Education) credits, the credits being rewarded to participants-doctors online via the CME Electronic Credit System.

Selected Facts in 2019

  • In the reported year 2019, in addition to FDRH inpatient and clinical departments, Banská Bystrica Children’s University Hospital also took part in the meetings’ scientific program.
    • In 2019, 737 employees attended regular scientific work meetings, the average being 82 participants per month.
    • Out of the total number of participants, 230 were doctors and 507 other health care providers. The certificates of participation were issued for all those who attended the meetings.
  • About 800 educational activities yearly are planned for employees
  • Financial costs totalling 16,000 euros are intended for covering the educational activities in 2019 (in the year without impact of covid-19)
  • The planned salary costs for study leave and paid leave amounted to 121,226.84 euros. The actual salary costs used for the educational event in 2019, which was classified as a study leave, were 200,216.78 euros and salary costs for paid leave amounted to 272,432.88 euros.
  • In 2019, the total salary costs for education were 472,649.66 euros.

Selected Facts in 2020

  • 3,138 educational activities were planned for employees in 2020. Out of these, 2,810 educational activities were carried out and 328 educational activities were not; the quantitative implementation rate of the planned educational activities was 89.55%. In 2020, 69 unplanned educational activities carried out as well. Their date and the required attendance were not known until 2020.
  • The reason for some educational activities not being carried out was primarily the spread of the infectious disease COVID-19, on the basis of which most of the planned educational events were cancelled out of preventive measures. Another reason for some of the educational activities not being carried out was their non-inclusion in the Specialised Study by the educational institution, maternity or parental leave, termination of employment, cancellation of the educational activity or personal reasons of the employees. The fact that some activities were not carried out incurred no additional financial costs for FDR UGH.
  • Financial costs totalling 16,397 euros were intended for covering the educational activities in 2020, while the actual costs of educational activities in 2020 reached a total of 2,666 euros. The planned salary costs for study leave and paid leave amounted to 78,411 euros. The actual salary costs used for the educational event in 2020, which was classified as a study leave, were 178,595.65 euros and salary costs for paid leave amounted to 52,931.58 euros. In 2020, the total salary costs for education were 231,527.23 euros.

External Education

  • the Department of Science, Research and Education administratively provided internships for doctors and mid-level health providers from other health facilities in the context of their postgraduate specialised studies. These internships took place at FDRH inpatient and clinical departments.

Selected Fact in 2019

  • In 2019, the total number of internships completed at FDRH was 135, of which 120 were doctors’ and 15 mid-level health providers’ internships.
  • In 2019, 717 students from high schools, vocational schools and Slovak and Czech universities completed compulsory professional student training as part of their undergraduate studies at FDRH clinical and inpatient departments, 161 students coming from faculties of medicine and 555 students from other faculties, mostly from the Faculty of Health of the Slovak Medical University of Banská Bystrica and from the Secondary Nursing School of Banská Bystrica.
  • In 2019, the total number of internships and student trainings completed at FDRH was 852.

Selected Facts in 2020

  • The epidemiological situation affected, among other things, the number of completed internships at FDR UGH inpatient and clinical departments. The internships were postponed and simultaneously cancelled throughout the months of March, April and May. As the epidemiological situation improved, FDR UGH relaxed some measures in June 2020. One of them was the permission of internships in inpatient and clinical departments, under the condition of proving one’s negativity with a COVID-19 test. In 2020, the total number of internships completed at FDR UGH was 103, of which 70 were doctors’ and 33 mid-level health providers’ internships.
  • In 2020, 695 students from high schools, vocational schools and Slovak and Czech universities completed compulsory professional student training as a part of their undergraduate studies at FDR UGH clinical and inpatient departments, 160 students coming from faculties of medicine and 535 students from other faculties, mostly from the Faculty of Health of the Slovak Medical University of Banská Bystrica and from the Secondary Nursing School of Banská Bystrica. In 2020, the total number of internships and student trainings completed at FDR UGH was 798.
  • Due to the unfavourable epidemiological situation associated with the COVID-19 disease, FDR UGH took preventive measures from 9 March 2020 and suspended educational activities in the hospital. The Department of Science, Research and Education therefore organized only two scientific work meetings, which were attended by 144 employees, out of which 83 were doctors and 61 other health care providers. The certificates of participation were issued for all those who attended the meetings.

EDUKA Training Centre

  • In September 2019, FDRH opened a new modern multimedia-equipped EDUKA Training Centre for supporting education, sharing new knowledge and experience in the field of medicine, pharmacy and healthcare.
  • The newly built Educational Centre is a fully equipped complex for holding professional educational events (lectures, seminars with live broadcasts from Operating Theatres, workshops, webinars, or congresses).
  • The EDUKA Training Centre has 5 multifunctional air-conditioned lecture halls with a total capacity of 160 seats. The halls are equipped with interactive whiteboards enabling livestream, real-time visual collaboration and mirroring of 4 mobile devices simultaneously. Multifunctional Wi-Fi network, hall sound system, control of light intensity, barrier-free access, parking and catering in the Centre is a standard.
  • The EDUKA training centre creates conditions for educating FDRH employees and broadening their knowledge in accordance with the both current and future qualification and expertise requirements in line with the established Quality Management System.

Selected facts in 2020

In 2020, the activities of the training centre were significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to restrictions and preventive COVID measures, numerous planned international educational events, such as congresses and workshops, were cancelled. However, there were many educational events that took place in an online space instead and thus technological equipment of the training centre (digital whiteboard enabling livestream and online sketching, multifunctional wi-fi network, etc.) could have been fully used. Some of the most successful educational events are listed below:

  1. “UP-TO-DATE Transplant 2020” webinar, organized by the Slovak Society of Transplantation of SkMA under the auspices of the then Minister of Health of the Slovak Republic MUDr. Marek Krajčí,
  2. EDUKA Training Centre became a regional studio of the AAPC Academy’s (Astellas Advanced Prostate Cancer Academy) livestream. Such format allowed participants direct interaction with lecturers of interesting topics in the area of urology and oncology under the professional guarantee of MUDr. Vladimír Baláž, PhD.,
  3. a thematic workshop in the field of robotic surgery focused on the technique of nerve-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy supervised by Prof. Dr. Alexander Haese, Martini-Klinik, Hamburg, Germany,
  4. “Virtual Meeting of Experts in Biological Therapy: Autoimmune Diseases Through a Magnifying Glass” webinar presided by Prof. MUDr. Juraj Péč, CSC.,
  5. an interactive online workshop in the field of radiology, where doctors of FDR UGH had the opportunity to discuss an interesting topic with Prof. Charbel Mounayer, France,
  6. certified educational course VITALKA broadcasted from the outpatient clinic in order to share therapeutic procedures with the participants of the course, organized under the auspices of 2nd SMU Department of Internal Medicine – Outpatient Clinic of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, as well as Slovak Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology of SkMA.

In total, approximately 30 educational events were organised in accordance with the COVID restrictions.
